5 Track EP review
What immediately strikes me on first hearing Tom Mitchell’s 5 track CD, is the amount of depth and expression in both his playing and vocal performance. The listener can be forgiven for thinking this is an already established musician and it does come as some surprise to learn that the artist in question is only 22 years of age. He does however, seem to have already squeezed a lot into those 22 years to prepare him for this metamorphosis from teen frontman in various covers bands into a serious solo singer/songwriter.
Tom is still experimenting with styles and shaping his very own sound and the promising self-penned ‘Convenience’ is an exciting taste of things to come. His focus and unquestionable talent make a refreshing change from the disposable manufactured ‘pop-stars’ all too frequently held up as the ‘next big thing’. Tom won’t be a ‘here today gone tomorrow’ flash in the pan – his genuine, intrinsic, creativity will endure.
Tom plays all the instruments featured on this EP: acoustic guitar, 12string, bass, harmonica and piano, which is an impressive list! His first instrument is the acoustic guitar and his technical ability on this instrument is astounding. It is obvious that he loves to play. I have had the privilege of seeing Tom play live a couple of times over the years and with every gig he just gets better and better – it seems to me there’s just no boundaries to what he can achieve. Better keep a close eye on this one!
